A Circle is not a Circle

Eight out of ten women love some sort of continuous, circular motion around the clit during arousal.

What’s interesting, though, is that there’s a huge variety of “circles” and one woman’s favorite circular motion could actually hurt for someone else, or not feel like anything at all. Here’s an in-depth look at the main varieties, how they work and why they feel good.

The Science of Circles

Why do continuous motions like circles, ovals and figure-8’s feel so good? Because they repeatedly stimulate a wide area.

The clit has a complex network of nerves that go far and wide under the skin and each woman has “hot spots” that feel best.

What gets tricky is that these spots can change around over time and at different stages of arousal. It’s like that itch that gets scratched but now there’s another itch that needs some attention.

For most women, pleasure only builds when those hot spots are stimulated repeatedly, in a pattern, over and over. A circular motion is the most efficient way to keep covering the territory, even as the spots change.

The two biggest variables in how different circles feel are a) location of where you touch and how the hood skin is involved and b) amount of pressure. Yes, we’re talking millimeters and very tiny differences in pressure—so slight it’s hard even to see—but they each feel very different.

Location

When it comes to circles and the clit, the hood skin is almost always involved. The closer to directly touching the clit, the more intense the feeling. The further away or less direct (through hood skin), the less intense the feeling.

1

Staying Away

The least intense way to orbit the clit is to stay far away from it - gliding in gentle circles that stay above, below and to the the sides of the hood and clit and never touch the exposed clit directly. For women who like this, the clit is so sensitive that any pressure nearby does affect the clit - like little echoes or ripples.

2

On the Hood

Keeping the touch above the line, on the hood skin, without the circle ever touching the exposed clit beneath. The part of skin that you touch and keep contact with is really important. Holding high on the hood feels less intense than holding lower down, near the bottom edge of the hood. (see Layering)

3

Off and On the Hood

Many women prefer circles that mostly stay on the hood but then occasionally swipe and glide below it to include the part of the clit that is exposed. The upper clit gets soft pressure through the hood, giving the exposed clit a small break between each time it’s touched.

4

Direct Hit

For less sensitive clits, or at stages when the clit likes more direct stimulation, many women say circles right on the exposed clit feel wonderful. To do this, you can get the hood out of the way if the clit is a hider (covered up by skin) - either by lifting the entire pubic hair area upward with a hand. Or by pushing just the area right above the hood skin upward with the side of your thumb.

“I love when he moves the skin over my clitoris in really tiny circles. It really matters where his finger is holding the skin, though - so, each time, he tries a few times till I tell him when he’s on the perfect place.”

Pressure

Pressure

1 2 3

Gliding

A circle that glides over the wet hood skin with so little pressure, the skin doesn’t even move. One popular way of thinking about it is that it’s so light, you’re only actually touching the wetness on the surface - like swirling the little bubbles of wetness, which are then moving ever so gently against the clit.

Moving the Skin

One step more intense is a touch firm enough that you actually move the skin around - but not so hard that you’re pressing. Think of it as gripping and moving a small patch of skin beneath your finger/tongue/penis tip or toy in circles around the hardened clit beneath.

Firm Massage

Some women like circular motion to sometimes be firmer and actually press through the skin and really massage the hardened clit beneath the skin. Warning - this is too intense and even painful for many and is often used as an occasional pressure, not a constant one.

Wonderful Combinations

Double Circles

This can be difficult, like rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time. But many women like a circle with one hand or tongue or penis tip on the opening or butt, with another circle at the same time on the clit. With both happening at once, it can be intense and pleasurable. The tricky part is that often the speed/pressure that feels best on the clit is different from the speed/pressure that feels best on the opening! See Diana’s demonstration.

Constantly Changing Circles

While many women like consistency when approaching orgasm, during the buildup, variation can increase pleasure.

“When any one part gets too much attention, it doesn’t feel as good, so I like when each circle is different from the last one all the way from really big massaging ones to really tiny light ones right on the button. Then when I’m close, I like to just stick with the last one that was happening for the whole rest of the time.”

Skipping

One way to extend pleasure is to skip over certain parts of a repeated motion—literally lifting your finger, tongue, etc. and skipping a part of the pattern. This can build anticipation and intensify the orgasm.

Tight Orbits

Some women prefer the circles so small, it’s almost hard to call them circles. Think of holding a pen on one point on the paper and rotating the pressure around and around rather than moving in actual loops.

Tall Ovals

What many women call “circles” are actually ovals. Many women prefer ovals that are so vertical, they almost look like up-and-down motions, but because they’re ovals, they can also pass by the clit in a sideways motion at the top on each pass.

Searching with Circles

“Each day, the spot that feels best is slightly different. So every time we have to search around a little bit. When he hits the spot for that day, I say, ‘right there’ or something, and then he focuses on that spot.”

Off-Center

One out of four women get more pleasure from touch on one side of the clit. For example, circling on just the left side or just the right side. Amber, for instance likes the circles to stay on the left side.

Occasional Direct Swipe

A very popular combination is to stay mostly with circles on the hood but then widen the circle so that it gently swipes the exposed clit for one stroke before returning to circle the hood.

This can be done with consistent pattern, such as repeating two circles on the hood, then one swipe down. Or it can be with more surprise where the stroke swipes down once in a while, without a pattern.

“I can’t take it if it’s right on the clit over and over, but I love when he stays above most of the time, then intersperses a big soft circle that hits my clit. Especially when I don’t know when the next one is coming.”

“It’s best for me when every 4 or 5 circles on the hood, I get one big lick down and then up so I only sometimes gets licked right on my clit.”

Accenting on the Clock

With any circle, you can add extra pressure to one portion of the rotation. For example, you may apply extra pressure on the top right part of the circle (12 o’clock to 3 o’clock) each time you go around. (See Accenting for more.)

Inward on the Borders

In this motion, the finger/tongue/penis/toy moves around the border of the clit as if orbiting the center and applies inward pressure the whole time.

Widening Ovals

Sideways ovals are so popular because, while it may look like normal skin, the areas to the sides of the clit can provide powerful pleasure and can tolerate more pressure. Try widening the circles to the left and right occasionally or constantly, putting pressure on the outside areas to see what feels best.

“I only realized in my 50’s that I’m really sensitive on the parts to the sides of my clitoris, almost an inch away. So now I know what really works best is when I get close, sideways wide ovals that really dig into the skin on the sides but are gentle on the middle.”

Soft-Hard Figure 8

Alternating direct, firm loops on top and around hood, and then lightening the pressure on the bottom loops whenever passing over the actual, exposed clit.

Figure-8

This is a continuous infinity sign that crosses in the center and forms two loops. The center spot where the two loops cross gets twice the attention. And the effect for many women is “two circles at once” one above on the clit and one lower toward the opening - but, because it’s a continuous motion, it still feels like one constant stroke.

Helpful Guidelines

  • Repetition. It’s tempting to just try a circle once and decide if you like it. But to really give one a chance, you have to repeat it to see how the pleasure builds over time.
  • Ladder up. When in doubt, start with the most gentle, least direct circles (away from the clit, feather-light) and gradually throw in more intense circles and see what feels good.
  • Start with a favorite. When exploring together, start with what you both already know feels good and turn it “more circular” in some of the ways above.
  • Direction. Many women have a preference for either clockwise or counter-clockwise circles. Why do they feel different? Because with clockwise motion, the left edge of the clit gets hit harder than the right side. And vice-versa for counter-clockwise.

Most Common Challenges

  • Too fast. Steady, slower circles feel better for most women than lightening fast. Many partners tend to speed up when things are going well instead of keeping steady. When in doubt, start slow. When it’s working, keep working it.
  • Too much. Because each of the variations takes some time to build up, and if something hurts, you’re right back at square one. It’s best to only try a few at a time.
  • Too soon. For most women, these circular motions only feel good in the buildup and approach stages, so starting right out of the gate with orbiting may not work out.
